THEHORSECOURSE Facilitator training

TheHorseCourse Facilitator accredited training is for people who wish to work within equine assisted services (EAS) in an evidence-based and proven programme, supporting the hardest to reach and treat individuals with complex psycho-social needs.

We train and support a network of TheHorseCourse Approved Facilitators, their details can be found on the Locations page.

We are eager to train those who want to work for one of our approved centres across the UK and overseas – or open their own centre.

  • Level 4 PSA-approved: qualifies you to sit under the government's Professional Standards Authority, as a recognised professional in Health and Social Care
  • Unmounted EAS for those with complex psycho-social needs
  • World-leading efficacy evidence base
  • Ongoing support, supervision and CPD
  • Established 2010
  • Scholarships for those who have the talent and drive to do this work
  • Blended learning

TheHorseCourse is known for its world-leading evidence base (see Evidence page). We have a distinct methodology with a well-defined programme and a clear theory of change. The robust evidence of efficacy, proven by numerous university studies and evaluation experts, gives commissioners, referrers and funders confidence to engage with TheHorseCourse facilitators.

Our Facilitator training has been approved by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (PSA) Accredited Register AAHEP. This means that our approved Facilitators in the UK are eligible to be listed on the register – giving our colleagues in the NHS and Social Care real confidence in us as fellow professionals, accredited through the PSA, which gets its authority from Government.

IMPORTANT: we can only train those with significant Parelli, or similar, natural horsemanship skills and understanding of equine body language. TheHorseCourse's impact relies strongly on the style and quality of the horsemanship. If you are a Parelli level 3/4 student or a Parelli Instructor, you can be trained very quickly. If you are slightly lower level we can advise and support you to get your horsemanship to the level required.

Training is demanding and assessments will be ongoing and rigorous. If you do not pass an assessment you will receive clear feedback on areas to work on before a re-assessment.

  • Pre-requisites: Parelli Level 3 online (or we can assess a video)
  • 138 guided learning hours
  • 6 weeks +/- depending on aptitude and prior knowledge and experience
  • Online and face to face training
  • Face to face "Shadowing" - THC Facilitators delivering participant sessions through our network of hubs, or at your own location.

This training is kept as low-cost as possible as our charitable aim is to spread the benefit of our work as widely as possible. We want to support those who have the skills and potential to open and run their own centres worlwide.

There are often opportunities for Approved TheHorseCourse Facilitators to get freelance work at our supported centres, see Locations.

OCNL DIPLOMA IN EQUINE ASSISTED SERVICES - LEVEL 3

For those who do not meet our pre-requisites for training: we recommend the OCNL Level 3 Diploma in Equine Assisted Services (EAS) as a broad entry level qualification for EAS facilitators aiming to work unmounted to support moderate wellbeing needs. We are proud to say that TheHorseCourse authored this qualification, in consultation with a number of charities including BHS, as our gift to the EAS sector which was in need of a modality-neutral broad and credible qualification. We do not currently teach or assess this Diploma as we need to focus our resources on our own specialist training.

  • Ofqual-regulated
  • Hosted by a national awarding body: OCN London
  • 34 credits (340 guided learning hours)
  • Not tied to any specific EAS methodology
  • Entry level, solid foundation
  • Limited to facilitating unmounted EAS for participants with moderate (not complex) wellbeing needs
  • Costs - apply to current providers
